چکیده
This paper describes the laterally confined consolidation of an Israeli clay following compaction and swelling on wetting, including measurement lateral stresses. The results tests are compared to those obtained during from initially slurried condition. In comparing compression expansion indices relative vertical, mean stress, it was found that they varied, depending initial, preparation conditions; values approached with decreasing initial dry density. During unloading, were be independent conditions, essentially same as soil. coefficient earth pressure at rest loading, K 0 , compacted then wetted specimens reasonably constant regardless soil but significantly higher than value However, relationship between normalized coefficients rest, '/K overconsolidation ratio, OCR, for

Mechanical interaction between swelling compacted clay and fractured rock, and the leaching of clay colloids
We consider the interaction between a saturated clay buffer layer and a fractured crystalline rock engineered disturbed zone. Once saturated, the clay extrudes into the available rock fractures, behaving as a compressible nonNewtonian fluid. We discuss the modelling implications of published experiments carried out in Sweden and more recently in Japan. Extrusion is halted either when the advanc...
متن کاملSwelling Characteristics of Compacted, Expansive Soils
Abstraet-The limitations of existing methods for the prediction of swelling behavior of compacted softs are examined. Both the purely theoretical approach and the purely empirical approach are found to be inadequate. The present study is based on a semi-empirical approach in which a model of swelling behavior is developed leading to equations relating swelling potential or swelling pressure of ...
متن کاملThe Swelling Behavior of Clay - Sulfate Rocks
Clay-sulfate rocks are often encountered in engineering projects such as underground construction and waste repositories. The unique combination of clay swelling and chemical transformation of anhydrite into gypsum results in a swelling behavior that cannot be explained using conventional rock mechanics. The goals of this study are: 1) to investigate the strength characteristics of reconstitute...
متن کاملThe Rheology of Swelling Clay Dispersions
Nearly all muds, in drilling applications, contain smectite clay minerals, such as montmorillonite or hectorite, which have the remarkable property of swelling in the presence of water. Such systems are known to exhibit long-term gelation and thixotropic behavior, of great importance in applications, depending on clay volume fraction, particle properties (origin of the clay, surface charge, etc...
متن کاملOn the Thermal Consolidation of Boom Clay
When a mass of saturated clay is heated, as in the case of host soils surrounding nuclear waste disposals at great depth, the thermal expansion of the constituents generates excess pore pressures. The mass of clay is submitted to gradients of pore pressure and temperature, to hydraulic and thermal flows, and to changes in its mechanical properties. In this work, some of these aspects were exper...
